Product Details:

Getryl contains glimepiride, a sulfonylurea medication used to help control blood sugar levels. Glimepiride works by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin and increasing the effectiveness of insulin in the body's cells. This medication is part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes diet and exercise.

Purposes:

Getryl is indicated for use as an adjunct to diet and exercise in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps improve glycemic control in adults with this condition. It is not suitable for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Warnings:

  • Hemolytic Anemia: Patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency may be at risk for hemolytic anemia. A non-sulfonylurea alternative may be recommended in such cases.
  • Cardiovascular Risks: There may be an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality associated with sulfonylureas. Patients should be informed of these risks and discuss alternative treatments with their healthcare provider.

Cautions:

  • Hypoglycemia Risk: There is a risk of severe hypoglycemia, particularly in elderly patients or those with kidney impairment. Proper dosing and monitoring are essential.
  • Drug Interactions: Be cautious of potential interactions with other medications, including salicylates, sulfonamides, and certain diuretics. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.
