Product Details:
Losec Capsules contain Omeprazole, a powerful proton pump inhibitor (PPI) designed to reduce gastric acid secretion. By irreversibly blocking the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the gastric parietal cells, Omeprazole effectively inhibits both basal and stimulated acid secretion, providing rapid relief from symptoms associated with excessive stomach acid production.
Purposes:
Losec Capsules are indicated for the treatment of:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Erosive reflux esophagitis
- Long-term management of patients with healed esophagitis to prevent relapse
- Symptomatic relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Warnings:
- Malignancy Risk: When a gastric ulcer is suspected, it's essential to rule out malignancy before starting treatment, as Omeprazole can alleviate symptoms and potentially delay diagnosis.
- Fracture Risk: Long-term use of PPIs, especially at high doses, may slightly increase the risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine, particularly in elderly patients or those with other risk factors.
- Hepatic Impairment: In patients with liver dysfunction, consider reducing the dosage of Omeprazole, as its bioavailability and half-life may be increased.
Adverse Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Headache, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and flatulence.
- Uncommon Side Effects: Dizziness, paraesthesia, somnolence, insomnia, vertigo, increased liver enzymes, and skin rash or itching.
- Rare Side Effects: Mental confusion, agitation, aggression, depression, and hallucinations, predominantly in severely ill patients. Gynecomastia has also been reported.
Cautions:
- Vitamin B12 Absorption: Long-term use of Omeprazole may reduce the absorption of vitamin B12 due to reduced gastric acidity. Patients with risk factors for vitamin B12 deficiency should be monitored.
- Contraindications: Omeprazole is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components or substituted benzimidazoles. It should not be used in conjunction with nelfinavir.
