Product Details
Prazol 40mg Capsules contain Omeprazole, a powerful proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Omeprazole works by inhibiting the secretion of gastric acid through the irreversible blockage of the enzyme hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase). This inhibition reduces both basal and stimulated acid production, providing relief from acid-related discomfort and promoting healing in conditions like erosive reflux esophagitis.
Purposes
The primary purpose of Prazol 40mg Capsules is to manage and treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and related conditions. It is also effective in the long-term prevention of relapse in patients with healed esophagitis, as well as in the symptomatic treatment of GERD.
Warnings
-
Gastric Ulcer Consideration: Before starting treatment with Prazol Capsules, it is crucial to exclude the possibility of malignancy in patients suspected of having a gastric ulcer. Treatment may alleviate symptoms and delay the correct diagnosis.
-
Fracture Risk: Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, especially in high doses, may increase the risk of fractures in the hip, wrist, or spine, particularly in elderly patients or those with other risk factors.
-
Hepatic Impairment: Patients with impaired liver function may experience increased bioavailability and a longer half-life of Omeprazole. Therefore, dosage adjustments should be considered for these patients.
Adverse Effects
Common side effects of Prazol Capsules include headache, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, and flatulence. Less frequently, patients may experience dizziness, sleep disturbances, or skin reactions like rash and pruritis. Rarely, patients may encounter mental confusion, agitation, or gynecomastia, particularly in severely ill patients.
Cautions
Long-term use of Prazol Capsules may lead to reduced absorption of vitamin B12 due to decreased stomach acidity. Patients with reduced vitamin B12 stores or risk factors for deficiency should be monitored during prolonged therapy. Additionally, Omeprazole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or with a history of allergic reactions to substituted benzimidazoles.
Always consult a healthcare provider before starting or discontinuing Prazol 40mg Capsules, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have pre-existing medical conditions.
