Product Details
Risperiget 2 mg Tablets contain Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat schizophrenia. Although the precise mechanism by which risperidone works is not fully understood, its therapeutic effects are believed to be due to its ability to block dopamine Type 2 (D2) and serotonin Type 2 (5HT2) receptors in the brain. This dual receptor antagonism helps to balance neurotransmitter levels, reducing symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorders associated with schizophrenia. Risperidone’s clinical effectiveness is further supported by its active metabolite, 9-hydroxyrisperidone (paliperidone).
Purposes
Risperiget 2 mg Tablets are indicated for the treatment of:
- Schizophrenia: Risperidone is effective in managing the symptoms of schizophrenia, including positive symptoms (e.g., hallucinations and delusions) and negative symptoms (e.g., emotional withdrawal and lack of motivation).
Warnings
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A rare but potentially life-threatening condition characterized by high fever, muscle rigidity, and altered mental status has been reported with the use of antipsychotic drugs like Risperiget. Immediate medical attention is required if these symptoms appear.
- Tardive Dyskinesia: Long-term use of antipsychotics, including Risperiget, can lead to involuntary, repetitive movements, which may be irreversible. Patients should be monitored regularly for early signs of this condition.
- Metabolic Changes: Atypical antipsychotics, including Risperiget, can cause metabolic side effects such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and significant weight gain, which may increase the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Monitoring of metabolic parameters is recommended.
Adverse Effects
Common side effects associated with Risperiget 2 mg Tablets include:
- Increased Mortality in Elderly Patients: Particularly in those with dementia-related psychosis.
- Cerebrovascular Adverse Events: Such as stroke, especially in elderly patients with dementia.
- Metabolic Changes: Including high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), diabetes, dyslipidemia, and weight gain.
- Hyperprolactinemia: Elevated levels of prolactin, which can lead to hormonal imbalances and related symptoms.
- Orthostatic Hypotension: Sudden drops in blood pressure upon standing, leading to dizziness and potential falls.
- Leukopenia, Neutropenia, and Agranulocytosis: Decreased white blood cell counts, which may increase infection risk.
- Potential for Cognitive and Motor Impairment: Affecting thinking, coordination, and movement.
- Seizures: Risperiget may lower the seizure threshold in some patients.
- Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing, which can be particularly dangerous in elderly patients.
- Priapism: A rare but serious side effect involving prolonged and painful erections.
- Body Temperature Regulation: Risperiget may disrupt the body’s ability to regulate temperature, leading to hypothermia or hyperthermia.
- Patients with Phenylketonuria: Should avoid this medication if it contains aspartame.
Drug Interactions
Risperiget 2 mg Tablets can interact with several other medications, including:
- Fluoxetine and Paroxetine: Which may increase the levels of risperidone in the blood.
- Carbamazepine: Which can decrease the effectiveness of risperidone.
- Levodopa and Dopamine Agonists: Which may have reduced efficacy when taken with Risperiget.
- Ketoconazole, Verapamil, and Furosemide: Which may alter risperidone levels in the body.
- Anticholinergics: Which may exacerbate side effects such as dry mouth and constipation.
Cautions
- Elderly Patients with Dementia-Related Psychosis: Should be treated with caution as they are at an increased risk of death when using antipsychotic drugs like Risperiget.
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use Risperiget if you have a known allergy to risperidone, paliperidone, or any other ingredients in the formulation. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Seek medical help immediately if these occur.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Consult your healthcare provider before using Risperiget 2 mg Tablets if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. The safety of risperidone during pregnancy and lactation has not been fully established, and it should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
