Product Details

Vetrawin Tablets 250mg contain levetiracetam, a medication with a complex and not entirely understood mechanism of action. Vetrawin Tablets impact neuronal calcium levels by partially inhibiting N-type calcium currents and reducing calcium release from intracellular stores. Additionally, these tablets affect GABA- and glycine-gated currents and bind to a specific site in brain tissue associated with neurotransmitter release. This binding to the synaptic vesicle protein 2A is believed to contribute to the drug's efficacy in controlling seizures.

Purposes

Vetrawin Tablets are used in the management of various seizure disorders. The indications include:

  • Monotherapy: For the treatment of partial onset seizures, with or without secondary generalization, in adults and adolescents aged 16 years and older who have newly diagnosed epilepsy.
  • Adjunctive Therapy: For partial onset seizures, with or without secondary generalization, in individuals aged 6 years and above. It is also used for treating myoclonic seizures in those aged 12 years and above with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients aged 6 years and older with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy.

Warnings

Several warnings are associated with Vetrawin Tablets. The medication may require dose adjustments in patients with renal impairment or severely impaired hepatic function. Very rarely, it has been linked to acute kidney injury, with onset ranging from a few days to several months. Vetrawin Tablets may also cause severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis or angioedema, necessitating immediate discontinuation and medical attention if these symptoms occur.

Adverse Effects

Common side effects of Vetrawin Tablets include nasopharyngitis, somnolence, and headache. Other common issues are anorexia, mood changes, anxiety, and various gastrointestinal symptoms. Uncommon effects may include blood disorders, psychiatric symptoms, and liver function abnormalities. Rarely, more severe adverse effects such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and acute kidney injury have been reported.

Cautions

It is crucial to monitor patients for suicidal thoughts or behaviors when using Vetrawin Tablets, as antiepileptic drugs can increase these risks. Additionally, the medication should be used with caution in patients with renal or severe hepatic impairment, and any signs of severe allergic reactions should be addressed promptly. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting Vetrawin Tablets and ensure proper storage at room temperature, away from light and heat.
