Claritek XL Tablets 500mg contain clarithromycin, an antibiotic that fights bacterial infections by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunits of bacteria and inhibiting protein synthesis. This action effectively suppresses the growth and spread of bacteria in the body. Claritek XL Tablets are commonly prescribed for treating a range of infections, including those of the respiratory tract, skin, and soft tissues, as well as mycobacterial infections.

Purposes

XL Tablets are primarily used to treat bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the respiratory system (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), the upper respiratory tract (like sinusitis and pharyngitis), and skin conditions like folliculitis and cellulitis. Additionally, Claritek XL is effective against certain mycobacterial infections, ensuring comprehensive protection against a variety of bacterial strains.

Warnings

1. Renal Insufficiency: Caution is necessary for patients with severe renal issues as clarithromycin may need dose adjustments to prevent complications.
2. Hepatic Dysfunction: Cases of liver dysfunction, including elevated liver enzymes and hepatitis, have been reported. Discontinue use of Claritek XL if symptoms of liver damage such as jaundice, dark urine, or abdominal pain occur.
3. Hepatic Failure Risk: In rare cases, liver failure has been reported, especially in patients with pre-existing conditions. Immediate discontinuation is advised if signs of liver issues appear.

Adverse Effects

Common side effects of Claritek XL Tablets include diarrhea, nausea, headaches, and abdominal discomfort. Rare but serious adverse reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and anaphylaxis have been noted. Some patients may experience reversible tooth discoloration, hearing loss (especially in elderly women), or alterations in taste and smell. In very rare cases, Claritek XL may cause QT prolongation and ventricular arrhythmias.

Cautions

Claritek XL Tablets should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to macrolides or those taking certain medications like cisapride, ergot alkaloids, or oral midazolam due to potential interactions that may cause serious complications. Pregnant women, especially in their first trimester, should only use this medication if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
