Product Details
Getryl Tablets 3mg contain the active ingredient glimepiride, a medication used primarily for managing blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This drug works by stimulating the pancreatic beta cells to produce more insulin and enhancing the effectiveness of peripheral insulin receptors. Despite its well-established use in lowering blood glucose, the precise long-term mechanism of action of Getryl is not fully understood.
Purposes
Getryl Tablets are indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This medication is not suitable for type-1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis, as it does not address these conditions.
Warnings
Getryl should be used with caution in individuals with a history of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency due to the potential for hemolytic anemia. Additionally, there may be an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality with sulfonylureas, so patients should be informed of the associated risks and alternatives. In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis, angioedema, and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome may occur; immediate discontinuation and appropriate medical intervention are necessary.
Adverse Effects
Common side effects of Getryl include hypoglycemia, dizziness, asthenia, headache, and nausea. Gastrointestinal issues like vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, as well as rare dermatologic reactions, have been reported. Monitoring for potential liver enzyme elevation and allergic skin reactions is advisable.
Cautions
Severe hypoglycemia is a significant risk with Getryl, necessitating careful patient selection and dosing, especially for at-risk populations such as the elderly or those with renal impairment. Avoid abrupt discontinuation of the medication to prevent a sudden increase in seizure frequency. Always consult with your physician before starting this medication to ensure it is appropriate for your condition.
