Product Details
Nixaf Tablets 550mg, containing the active ingredient Rifaximin, are specifically formulated to combat bacterial infections. Rifaximin works by binding to the bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis. This action effectively targets non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli, among others, reducing the production and absorption of bacterial toxins in the gut. Nixaf Tablets are particularly useful in managing conditions like hepatic encephalopathy, where neurotoxins, including ammonia, play a significant role.
Purposes
The primary purpose of Nixaf Tablets is to treat bacterial infections, especially those involving the gastrointestinal tract. The medication helps in reducing the development of drug-resistant bacteria by ensuring it is only used for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.
Warnings
-
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD): Use of Nixaf Tablets can lead to CDAD, which may range from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. It is essential to monitor for CDAD in all patients with diarrhea post-antibiotic use. If CDAD is confirmed, discontinuation of the antibiotic may be necessary.
-
Breastfeeding Caution: It is unknown whether Rifaximin is excreted in human milk. Due to potential risks to nursing infants, a decision should be made whether to discontinue the drug or stop nursing, considering the importance of the medication to the mother.
-
Hepatic Insufficiency: Patients with severe hepatic insufficiency may experience increased systemic exposure to Rifaximin. Caution is advised when administering to these patients.
Adverse Effects
Common side effects of Nixaf Tablets include gastrointestinal disturbances such as flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, and constipation. In patients with hepatic encephalopathy, symptoms like peripheral edema, fatigue, and muscle spasms may occur. Less commonly, patients might experience vertigo, abdominal tenderness, dry mouth, or esophageal variceal bleeding.
Cautions
Patients should discontinue Nixaf Tablets if diarrhea symptoms worsen or persist beyond 24-48 hours, especially if caused by pathogens other than Escherichia coli. Alternative antibiotic therapies should be considered under such circumstances.
